“Eastern Side”

October 25th, 2009

This is the first song of a new download category called, “Song Sketch / Works in Progress.” These will usually be simple recordings of songs I’ve just written or songs I’ve written in the last year and feel stuck with the progress. In the case of this song: I like what I have, but it doesn’t seem like a lot. Maybe you’ll agree, maybe you’ll think it’s fine.

Eastern Side v.1 (2009)

Here are the lyrics as they are in the recording.

calm down on the eastern side
feel up and down your spine
find love in the graveyard
feel that moonlight coil

calm down on the eastern side
calm down on the eastern side

she’s gone away like dawn
she’s gone away like dawn
she was bright
but she died

fall light on the eastern side
fall light on the eastern side
fall light on the eastern side
fall light, fall light

P.S. – Happy Birthday, Mom.

Saw your second request for feedback. I thoroughly enjoy the song as is. When you say the first line, I am literally calmed. Would I hate it if you extended the song a bit, somehow incorporating the “she’s gone away like dawn” part or something like it, and maybe added some faint strings near the end? No, but I like it how it is.

Thanks. There’s actually an additional melody that I haven’t recorded yet, but it changes the song a bit. I agree that if it was longer, I’d be happy. But without another verse I can’t see how I’d do it unless I layered it at the end with more instruments – and I tend to fall back on that quite a bit.

I followed Kim’s link to the loud and brave post. I still had the other Chris Miller Adventures feed going, I didn’t notice this one has a different address.

Anyway, I can’t say much about this song, except that is exceptionally beautiful. Your vocal melody is perfect. The little bit of rawness in the recording is perfect. It makes me want to quit playing music.

:) Thanks, but please don’t quit playing music. In many ways, your song writing the last few years has encouraged and inspired me to revisit my own. You’re the real deal, dude.

I really like this song, it’s so pretty. I heard strings in my head during the third verse.. kind of a crescendo type thing.

Find love in the graveyard.. I wonder who took that the wrong way, sick bastards.. hahaha.

Thanks. Strings are a good idea. In the back of my mind I’m always thinking of ways to flesh this song out.
